Life After Death: The Burden of Proof by Deepak Chopra
From Publishers Weekly In India death is perceived very differently than in the West, “as a brief stopping point on an endless soul journey,” says Chopra in this introduction to life beyond bodily existence. Chopra, a medical doctor and world leader in mind-body medicine as well as author of more than 45 books, now ventures to answer: what happens after we die? For Chopra, death deserves to be called miraculous, a “doorway to a far more important event—the beginning of the afterlife” and a mode of being that “can be as creative as living.”
No Death, No Fear by Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh always invites us to look deeply, and he does so once again in No Death, No Fear. Recognizing interconnections, Nhat Hanh brings us to beginnings, how they depend on endings, and how they are but temporary manifestations. Everything endures, he says, but in different forms.
And this isn’t just a palliative to make us feel better for a while–Nhat Hanh’s philosophy of Interbeing takes the long view, challenging us to open our eyes to subtle transformations. He shows how extraordinary things happen when we are fully present with others and at peace with ourselves, both of which require openness and deep looking.
In his bestselling style of easy prose, compelling anecdotes, and pragmatic advice, Nhat Hanh gradually drains the force out of grief and fear, transforming them into happiness and insightful living. Death doesn’t have to be a roadblock, and in No Death, No Fear Thich Nhat Hanh shows us the way around.
John of God: The Brazilian Healer Who’s Touched the Lives of Millions by Heather Cumming Sometime in 1951 João Teixeira de Faria, age nine, rightly predicted which houses in his aunt’s neighborhood would be damaged or destroyed by an impending windstorm. Since then, his abilities have expanded to include the channeling of a number of Entities, or spirits.
Two of his followers (from the Casa de Dom Inácio de Loyola, where he makes his home and performs his healings), Cumming and Leffler, began gathering testimonials and “spirit photographs,” pictures that they believe capture the essence of the spirits. The result is a combination history–prayer guide–visitors’ primer on medium João and his work in South America and throughout the world.
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth GilbertFor someone like me who considers eating marvelous food a spiritual experience, the above could easily be my life mantra. It’s also the title of an amazing memoir by Elizabeth Gilbert, just out in hardcover. A friend gave me this book as a gift (thank you, Julia) and it was a welcome respite in a hectic week.
I took an entire Sunday to do nothing but lie on the coach, in bed or in the bathtub reading this book. Gilbert’s story chronicles a year in which she spent four months each in Italy (eat), India (pray) and Bali (love). If you have ever longed for, or been terrified to, give yourself the time and space you really need to heal, or just get to know yourself, reading Eat, Pray, Love will speak to you. It’s full of glorious meals, authentic soul searching and honest insights into the messiness and beauty of the human condition.
There are profound truths and marvelous spiritual practices (have you ever tried smiling from your liver?) Eat, Pray, Love is also a reminder that the busy-ness with which we fill our lives is often a distraction from what really matters. I loved, loved, loved this book and I refuse to loan it to anyone because I want to read it again.
The Power of Now by Eckhart TolleIn The Power of NowEckhart Tolle effectively teaches how to bring Presence into each moment in a way that will transform your whole life.
You can get these fantastic books in print and I also recommend listening to the author’s voice on the
full-length audio versions, available on CD. Purchase A New Earth : Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose on Audio CD
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle In A New Earth, Tolle expands on his previous work to explain how the Power of Presence is actually creating a new species of human being that has the capacity to usher in The New Earth.
In both works, the author offers examples of how to live in the Now, beginning, well….Now!

Blackberries in the Dreamhouse by Diane Frank Perfect for a quiet afternoon in front of the fire or an evening in the tub. The chapters in this poetic novel are short, but each one is so rich with vivid imagery and deep wisdom that you may want to savor the words over time. You could even use a chapter a day as a starting point for prayer or meditation.
Blackberries chronicles the inner world of a Japanese geisha with the soul of a priestess-artist. A dear friend recommended this book to me and I have since bought it for several people and shared it with my book club. I have yet to meet anyone who has not been touched by it.
The novel would make a wonderful gift for many people on your list, but don’t forget to get one for yourself. ~KVS
Ask and It is Given by Esther and Jerry HicksEsther Hicks channels a collective group of evolved souls that call themselves Abraham. I’m not one of those people who recommends channeled material just because it’s channeled (first you have to ask yourself if the channeler is for real; then you are faced with the dilemma of discerning how to know if the channeled material is worthwhile. After all, being discarnate doesn’t necessarily make one wise or benign).
That said, I find the advice of Abraham to be consistently reasonable, sensible and compassionate. Abraham’s teachings focus primarily on the Law of Attraction. If you are ready to take responsibility for your life and begin at least experimenting with the principles of attraction, this is a worthwhile read. ~KVS
Ask and It is Given Cards by Esther and Jerry HicksThese beautiful cards capture the essence of the life-changing, best-selling book Ask and It Is Given. You will experience an enhancing of your personal power, which may, at first, seem illogical or even magical, as the Energy Stream from which these cards have come dovetails with the true essence of your own being.
As you return for frequent visits to these beautiful cards, you will begin to notice a definite closing of the gap between where you are and where you want to be on all subjects that are important to you. The cards are a lovely accompaniment to the book–a tool to help you play with the principles of synchronicity and attraction in your daily life. ~KVS
Dance of the Dissident Daughter by Sue Monk KiddThis now classic memoir of an woman’s unexpected transformational journey from traditional Christianity to feminine spirituality has brought questions, clarity and deep wisdom to many, many women.
As Sue Monk Kidd’s story demonstrates, “the Truth may set you free, but first it will shatter the safe, sweet way you live.” ~KVS
The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
Step into the ancient legends of King Arthur’s Camelot—but this time through the eyes of the powerful women who shaped that world. Bradley’s magnificent story is not just a chronicle of the war between the Saxons and the Britons, but the struggle between Druid and Christian views of reality. The first time I read this book I plunged through its nearly 500 pages in just a few days (obviously I did little else).
I lived through the characters, in turns exhilarated, shocked, delighted, empowered, frightened, dismayed, angry and sorrowful. By the time I finished I was exhausted and yet somehow at peace. I have since read it again at least 20 times, and with each read I find some new wisdom. ~KVS
Words to Live By by Ecknath Easwaran
We will be writing a lot more about Ecknath Easwaran in our January/Meditation edition of Finds for Seekers. In the meanwhile, I would be remiss to leave him out of a list of life-changing authors, for I know of no one whose teachings are simultaneously so accessible and so sublime. Ecknath Easwaran was born and raised in India. While his religious background was Hindu, he was also steeped in the Christian Religious tradition of his English school. A contemporary of Ghandi’s, Easwaran was profoundly influenced by Ghandi’s ability to live peace.
Easwaran came to the United States as a young man and he taught the first accredited Meditation course here, at Berkley University. He founded the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in California and his work continues through the center and through the many books he published and the students whose lives his work transformed.
Words to Live By is a collection of inspirational passages from many religious traditions with short, practical, inspiring commentaries by Easwaran. It is a wonderful daily meditation tool as well as a perfect introduction to Easwaran’s writings. ~KVS
Original Goodness by Ecknath Easwaran
Original Goodness draws upon the wisdom of the Beatitudes to reveal the breathtakiing, untouchable beauty of the soul. My favorite teaching from this book is that Love is a Skill.
Thanks to Ecknath Easwaran, it is a skill I hope to consciously cultivate throughout my life. ~KVS
Creating Affluence by Deepak Chopra
It is difficult to select just a couple of books from among the many that Deepak Chopra has published, so I picked the ones whose concepts have been most active in my life over the last several years.
Dr. Chopra is an M.D. and I appreciate the way he combines his western medical training with both his Indian cosmology and quantum physics. Creating Affluence is an A-Z guide for creating joyful abundant life you want to have and sharing that joy and abundance with others.
My father was so impressed with Creating Affluence that he bought over 50 copies and gave them away. ~KVS
The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire by Deepak Chopra The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire
This book explains how we, the observers, shape the reality we experience, from the cellular level to the nature of our relationships.
This book gave me the practical tools I needed to direct my thoughts toward the possibility that my daughter Bridget might survive her early childhood. ~KVS
Sacred Pleasure: Sex, Myth, and the Politics of the Body–New Paths to Power and Love by Riane Eisler A riveting, potentially life-changing book by social psychologist Riane Eisler. Eisler offers a multi-cultural, historical summary of sexual repression, the purposes it serves, and the damage it does. The book makes a convincing case for the theory that all societal repression is ultimately rooted in sexual oppression, which separates us from each other, our bodies, our longings and our earth. What I like about Eisler’s work is that she criticizes patriarchy without falling into the trap of blaming all the men alive today for the destructive social dynamics that have been around for thousands of years. Instead, she challenges us all to look at how we unconsciously participate in maintaining the beliefs and behaviors that create cultural problems ranging from limited gender roles to sexual violence, eating disorders and war. While there is sobering material here, Eiseler gives us hope that we are perfectly positioned to create new ways of living and loving that will ultimately save us. If you want to know how you can help bring about the transformation of human consciousness, or even if you are just curious how we got where we are, READ THIS BOOK! KVS
I Do Not Heal, God is the One Who Heals: A Tribute to John of God (DVD)
John of God, an ordinary man with an astonishing gift as a psychic medium, does extraordinary spiritual healing.
This documentary is the insider’s view of John of God’s work narrated by a woman he recognizes as a “daughter of the House” and produced by an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Since 1960 John of God has been helping people who come to him in Brazil to heal from AIDS, cancer, and every kind of emotional and/or physical disorder—-all at no charge. People come from all over the world to consult with him. The vast majority have profound spiritual experiences. Some receive their healing through meditation and prayer, others through psychic or etheric surgery-a small percent choose a physical intervention. Those having physical surgeries do not experience pain, and there is little bleeding. Numbers of physicians have studied John’s work, and reported on its authenticity. “For thousands of years the priesthood held and carried the Way. It is now time to share the ancient mystical knowledge, so that everyone may benefit.”

The Secret (DVD)
When I heard about this DVD several times in one week, I decided I needed to watch it. It’s a simple and thorough explanation of the Law of Attraction and how to make it work for you. (Basically, the Law of Attraction states that all manifested reality begins at the level of thought, so your life is a direct result of where you put your thoughts and attention). I was familiar with these principles, having read many of the featured authors. There’s something about this movie though. There is no question in my mind that if you watch this film and apply the principles in it, your life will change for the better. My husband and I have watched it several times. Our marriage has improved, opportunities to create wealth are increasing and I walk around a lot of the time with a smile on my face, enjoying the awareness of creating my own life.
I bought this CD after hearing it playing at a small bookstore. It is a mesmerizing collection of Buddhist and Hindu chants set to captivating music. Premal has a sublime, hypnotic voice. None of the lyrics are in English, and this enhances, rather than detracts from, their power. I have heard that the energetic vibration of the Sanskrit language has healing and transformational qualities and I believe it after listening to this. The first time we listened to the DC, my husband (not a guy with a history of interest in Eastern chants) said, “it feels like the words can just get inside of you and change you somehow.” He has since taken possession of the CD—it lives in his car and office. Apparently we need another copy.
